Vintage Ballerina Compact 21st Anniversary Gift Vintage Ballerina Compact 21st Anniversary Gift ballet powder compact %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
A sought-after vintage Stratton Ballerina compact in very good condition. This ballet themed powder compact is an early Stratton 'Slim Convertible' which made before 1966. The enchanting enamel lid shows the ‘Pas de Quatre’. There isn't any loss of enamel/design and the whole piece is beautiful. All clasps and hinges work perfectly. The brass is a rich deep gold. The mirror gives an excellent and accurate reflection.
The mirror bezel is signed 'STRATTON MADE IN ENGLAND'. The brass powder well surround bears the patent number 764125. The powder well is lined with a clean white protective layer. This mid-century vanity comes with the original presentation box and all the original accessories - velour edged sifter, instruction leaflet, padded paper insert, black felt pouch, signed silk and fabric luxury puff, velour edged sifter, instruction leaflet and inspection docket. The base is decorated with a pattern of stars. This compact is robust and useful as it can accommodate all loose face powder as well as standard size (67mm) pans of compressed face powder, such as Rimmel Stay Matte, Max Factor Creme Puff, Miss Beauty and Constance Carroll CCUK. This vintage powder compact measures 3 1/4" and weighs 101.9 grams.

Traditionally the 21st anniversary is celebrated by gifting items made from brass and so this would make a very unusual gift.

The lid is signed 'Baron'. The scene is from a photograph taken by the society photographer Sterling Henry Nahum who used Baron as his professional name. In his thirties he noted that his ballet / ballerina photographs were most appreciated & so he was often at Sadler’s Wells Theatre. After WWII he mainly focused on society & celebrity portraits. Prince Phillip was a friend & Baron was appointed the Court Photographer to the British Royal Family. He took the official wedding photos of Princess Elizabeth & Prince Phillip. He did not take the official photographs for the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth in 1953, as the Queen Mother preferred Cecil Beaton. In 1954 he set up a the Baron Studios on Park Lane in Mayfair. He died two years later. The studio carried on until it was sold off in 1974. All the portraits were donated to The National Portrait Gallery in 1999.
