Victorian Silver Sugar Tongs, Exeter, 1856

This is a quality pair of large Victorian Sterling Silver Sugar Tongs in the classic Fiddle pattern. The Sugar Tongs are made in Exeter in a good gauge of silver by noted Devon silversmith John Stone and date to 1856. The initials JB are elegantly engraved on the hinge of the tongs. With a history going back to the 16th Century, Exeter Assay Office was formally established by Act of Parliament in 1701 but closed in 1883, making Exeter hallmarked pieces very sought after. The hallmarks on these Sugar Tongs, on the inside of the arms, are well struck and clear to read, although in an awkward position to photograph!
The Sugar Tongs are in very good condition with no dings or dents and only minimal wear and tear, having clearly been well looked after for the last 163 years. Please make sure you look at all the photos.
The tongs are 14.1cm long and weigh a substantial 31.8g of solid sterling silver.
The hallmarks are the lion passant for Sterling silver, the three towered wall assay mark for Exeter, the gothic date letter "u" for 1856, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the JS makers' mark for John Stone.
