Victorian Sailors Woolwork Picture. 'Woolie'
This is a really handsome example of an antique Victorian Sailors Wool Picture - or 'Woolie'. In excellent condition.
A traditional pastime of Sailors at sea on long voyages was to put their needlework skills to use, creating folk art pictures, most often of sailing vessels, to take home to their loved ones.
Sailors had to carry out many sewing and needle work tasks in their routine duties, such as repairing sails and clothing. Also, until the 1880’s, seamen had no standard uniform so they had to provide and maintain their own and sewing skills were essential.
This example shows a fully rigged 3 masted Sailing Ship flying the British Red Ensign or 'Red Duster' - flown by Merchant or Passenger ships since 1707.
It is beautifully stitched, in wool fibre and the rigging and details have been picked out in cotton thread. The ship is in full sail, each of which have been padded, or quilted to offer depth and definition.
There is a small second vessel behind to the left and landfall is profiled on the right.
The picture has a strong dramatic cloudy skyline.
Mounting and Framing.
The cloth is stretched in its original wood fibre board mount - crudely cut out on the inside edges by knife I suspect. There are 2 layers, front and back, with the cloth stitched between. The board frame has been reinforced behind by strips of wood with tacks turned over at the back to secure the mount. All totally original.
This has been block mounted behind a glazed Victorian birds eye maple frame with a silver gilt slip.
The rear of the needlework is revealed but protected by a piece of perspex so that the stitching and knot work can still be examined.
Condition: Excellent. There is one very small section of fibre missing to the sky, (see photo) otherwise completely intact, and very clean. No moth wear.
Dimensions Framed: 21.5 inches x 17.5 inches ALL OF OUR ITEMS INCLUDE FREE UK MAINLAND DELIVERY.
