This beautifully executed work depicts a blacksmith at work in a rustic stable, shoeing a horse while a donkey and a faithful dog look on. The scene captures Landseer’s characteristic warmth and sensitivity toward animals, rendered here with excellent detail and atmosphere.

Painted in rich, earthy tones with strong chiaroscuro, the piece reflects the admiration Victorian artists had for Landseer’s celebrated animal studies. Presented in its original ornate gilt frame with scrolling acanthus decoration, complements the period charm of the work, in its original worn frame.
