Duchess of Sutherland Cripples Guild Arts & Crafts

A Duchess of Sutherland Cripples Guild, Arts & Crafts dish circa 1905. Stamped DSCG with coronet to the underside.
A lovely Arts & Crafts silvered copper bowl, dating to circa 1910, made by the Duchess of Sutherlands Cripples Guild at Trentham Hall, Stoke on Trent. A great, simple design, with a raised leaf and fruit on a hammered ground. The leaves and fruit to the centre of the bowl look very much like hops which grew in abundance in Kent, where I grew up. It is offered in reasonable condition, commensurate with age, albeit having bleeding to the silver plate with the copper base showing through. There is a very small tear to the outer rim, which has been stabilised, please see photographs.
It measures 31cm (just over 12 inches) in diameter and 6cm (2 inches) tall.
UK 48 hour and tracked postage costs £10.00.
“The Duchess of Sutherland and her Cripples Guild, an enterprise of Education, Hope and Comfort.”
The Duchess of Sutherlands Cripples Guild was formed by Lady Millicent Fanny St.Clair-Erskine, Duchess of Sutherland in 1900.
The Guild was originally formed to help children from the Staffordshire Potteries as at the time they were notorious for unsafe practices, leaving many children with disabilities. They were taught craft skills to make items that were retailed through the Guild. The money raised was to fund the Guild plus holiday and convalescent homes.
The makers mark of DSCG under a ducal coronet was introduced.
In 1907 under the direction of Francis Arthur Edwardes, the Guild began to produce replicas of 16th to 18th century items from the collections of private clients and museums. A shop was opened on New Bond Street, London, and the Guild was successful in attempting to sell to a very wealthy clientele, including the then King and Queen. Most items were in copper or silver plated copper, but some examples of silver work were also produced.
The Guild was impacted by the First World War, where like many workshops at the time, the focus turned to making items in support of the war effort. By the early 1920's tastes were changing and the Duchess decided to close down the Guild.
