Superb Striking Regulator Clock - Whistler, London
This is a particularly fine and most rare striking English Regulator Longcase antique clock which is in truly outstanding condition with the case having retained its original finish and having developed the most wonderful colour.
The dome top case of typical form is veneered with the finest mahogany which has superb flame and a high shine . I am very fond of the lace like carved frett under the dial and a rebate in the door to prevent the ingress of dust.
Edward Whistler is recorded as working from 1840 to 1860 in the Strand , London.
The massively constructed and finely finished movement is of the highest quality
The weight driven movement with thick plates united by six heavy turned pillars, screwed to front and back plate, the latter with repeat signature, both trains with four wheels, each or six crossings, the going with Harrison's maintaining power and terminating in a deadbeat escapement with ruby pallets with a mercury jar pendulum suspended from a brass bracket mounted on the backplate, the strike train acting on a heavy coiled steel gong mounted on an iron and brass block mounted on the backboard
It is very rare indeed to find a regulator clock that has a second train for striking and a domestic style dial for easy reading.
The purists that say that regulators should only be timepieces with Observatory dials but I suspect that they have not seen a striking movement of this quality - which is undoubtedly of Regulator quality and will keep time to exact standards without having to decipher a traditional type dial.
The striking facility is very useful indeed
The overall condition is truly superb and ready to go straight into the home but , like all original antiques, there are the odd age related marks but nothing that will offend even the most discerning buyer.
This clock was previously purchased from the antiques department in Harrods , London in the 1980s
The clock is only 6 ft 3 inches tall , the trunk is 15 inches and the maximim depth is 11 inches
I would urge prospective buyers to visit and view the clock as it is much nicer than the images depict.
At the full asking price I will deliver, install and set up the clock and provide a full 12 months guarantee
If a lesser offer is accepted it will considered a trade sale with the clock sold as described with collection/delivery the responsibility of the buyer.
I will ship this clock worldwide but I will only use a specialist shipper who will make a purpose made wooden crate.
The contents of the pendulum will require shipping separately and UK are suggested to collect if possible although I can arrange a specialist to deliver the clock
Guesstimate rates are as follows
Europe £500 (can possibly meet on the continent)
USA £700
Asia and Australia £900
