Straw Back Orkney Armchair c.1930.

Delightful little child’s version of the classic straw back Orkney armchair c.1930. Pine frame with carved detail to the arms, oat straw backrest and a board seat. Original lead-based tan brown paint, nicely worn through in places. The straw remains in very good condition though it is missing a fixing where it meets the frame at the top left hand corner.
Dimensions: width 21″, depth 18″, height 30″
The Orkney chair with it’s distinctive straw back became an icon of the Arts & Crafts movement. A vernacular form produced on a commercial scale from 1870 in the workshop of David Kirkness in Kirkwall on Orkney, they were retailed by Liberty & Co. and examples were to be found in the homes of Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Edward VII.
Dimensions: width 21″, depth 18″, height 30″. Please contact us for more images, delivery and shipping quotes.
