Sidney Goodwin 1867-1944 Marine Watercolour Sidney Goodwin 1867-1944 Watercolour %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
We are pleased to offer for sale this historic watercolour by the artist Sidney Goodwin, who has signed the painting with his S.G. monogram in red, in the lower right hand corner. He often signed his watercolours in red. The painting depicts a barge and a sailing vessel off a Napoleonic Fort in the Solent, with a couple of fishermen in a rowing boat with nets or lobster pots aboard, in the foreground. It is possible that the fort shown is Horse Sand Fort, which is one of four of the Palmerstone forts built in the mid 1800s to protect the approaches to Portsmouth Harbour. The sea has a swell and the sky looks stormy.

Sidney Paul Goodwin, or Paul Sidney Goodwin (both are shown in Census records) was actually born in 1875, confirmed by official records, although most books and the auction sites list his birth date as 1867, which is why we have given the dates in the title that he is recognised by. He was the son of the artist William Sidney Goodwin (1833-1915) and the nephew of the famous Albert Goodwin (1845-1932). He and his father were living in Southampton in 1911, but in 1917 he had an address in Dublin and exhibited 15 paintings at the Royal Hibernian Academy.

We can find no record of him in the UK after 1911, nor a record of his death, and as he is known to have painted scenes of North Africa, Canada and Australia, think it is possible that he went travelling and died in another country.

He was a watercolourist and painted mainly coastal scenes and rural landscapes.

He is listed in The Dictionary of British Artists (Collectors' Club, The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood and The Dictionary of British Artists by Grant Waters.

His auction records may be found at artprice (121), arcadja (46) and findartinfo (60)
