Set of four 19th Century hand coloured prints of Great Exhib
A set of four 19th Century prints of the 1851 Great Exhibition, the prints are of lovely quality, hand coloured, printed by the Dickerson Brothers, originally painted by the artist Joseph Nash (1809-1878). Circa 1870.
The Great Exhibition of 1851 was probably the most successful, memorable and influential cultural event of the 19th century.
From May to October 1851, Hyde Park in London was filled with visitors to the ‘Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of all Nations’. The exhibition’s huge success confounded the predictions of its many doubters in parliament and the press: it was visited by over six million people (equivalent to a third of the British population at that date), and generated a vast profit of £186,000.
The 1851 exhibition was the first ever international exhibition of manufactured products. It inspired a long succession of international fairs in other cities, including Paris, Dublin, New York, Vienna and Chicago – almost one a year for the rest of the 19th century.
The exhibition was housed in a vast iron and glass building constructed specifically for the purpose in Hyde Park — the Crystal Palace.
Stretching 1,851 feet long and 128 feet high, Paxon's incredible masterpiece was built around several elm trees to prevent them from being cut down.
