Rutland and the Great War.

Rutland and the Great War. WW1 Rutland war memorabilia %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
A book of Rutland and the Great War. A lasting tribute to a great and noble part.

A first edition book, compiled by G. Phillips, and published by J. Padfield & Co. Ltd. in 1920.

A comprehensive record of people of Rutland who served and who died in the First World War. Together with a record of the many heroic efforts made by the people of Rutland to support the war effort.

The index of contents gives a very good picture of the war efforts given by the countries smallest county:

Biography of Major General Lord Ranksborough, Lord Lieutenant.
Biography of John Edward Corby Esq, High Sheriff.
Rutland and the Great War - A general review.
Visit to the battlefields of Belgium.
Biographies of the fallen.
The Scott family of soldier sons.
Rolls of Fallen Heroes and Rolls of Honour.
Rutland volunteer training corps.
Rutland Special Constables.
Rutland ASC motor transport.
Uppingham School war record.
Oakham School war record.
Women's work on the land.
Agriculture and food production.
Red Cross and VAD hospital work.
Patriotic efforts, savings schemes, needlework guild, National egg collection.
The Rutland War Pensions Committee and its work.
The Cottesmore Hunt and the war,
The King of the Belgiums' stables in Oakham.
Honours, Distinctions and Recognitions of service.
Local War Memorials.

You can see that the book gives a comprehensive record of the Rutland efforts. It is also fascinating reading, with pupils of Uppingham School gaining four Victoria Crosses, and a photograph of one of Queen Victoria's grandchildren (with German name changed) with the "Great and Good" of the county.

It is in good condition with wear to the cover hinge and base of the spine, neither which gives any instability to the book. Other than that there is slight bending to the corners of the cover.
