This is a rare continental lime-wood carving of St Paul dating from the 17th century. The gilded and polychrome figure is probably Spanish and shows Paul with a book in one hand, he possibly would have had a sword in the other. The figure itself is in very good condition for its age and the colouration and patina to the carving now is just beautiful with quite a bit of the original paint left to the head and face and several areas having quite bright gilding to them, over the old red oxide beneath.

In wonderful original condition, this is a charming and characterful piece. It stands 31 cms high and is 18 cms wide.
