Portuguese 917 Silver Coin Spoon, Joao VI, 1814

This is an attractive Portuguese 917 Grade Silver Coin Spoon. The stem has an organic design of intertwining plants surmounted by a finial featuring the Portuguese Royal Coat Of Arms. The bowl is made from a 400 Reis silver coin from when Joao (John) VI was acting as regent for his mother in 1814. He became King in his own right in 1817.
Interestingly Portuguese silver coinage was worth more than its stated value. Following a sharp rise in the value of silver in the late 17th century, a law was passed making all silver coins worth 20% more than their face value, so a 400 Reis coin was worth 480 Reis. Even when coins were redesigned with changing monarchs and styles, this law remained in place and so the coins were always worth more than their stated value well into the 19th century.
Condition is very good with no damage and only the most minimal wear. It is unlikely that this has ever been used as a spoon, being simply kept as a souvenir. The coin is well struck and clear to read. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The spoon is 11cm / 4.3ins long and weighs in at 22.5g / 0.79oz of solid silver.
As with most coin spoons, there is no separate hallmark. The date of the coin and its accepted status as silver being sufficient authentication.
