Portrait of Philippe I, Duke of Orleans C.1720

A fabulous portrait of Philippe I, Duke of Orleans (Duc d'Orleans, 1640 - 1701). Oil on canvas, circa 1720.
This wonderful posthumous portrait depicts Philippe I, the popular younger brother of King Louis XIV of France, and was painted around 20 years after his passing in 1701.
The sitter proudly wears his armour, which features splendid gold detail in the torso and arm, and a scarlet cloak across his shoulders, projecting a warm inviting smile towards the painter.
Galloping horses in front of a castle can be seen over his right shoulder, signifying the Duke's prominent victory over William of Orange at the battle of Cassel in 1677, and noted as such at the rear of the canvas.
Set within a period style gilt frame, and recently professionally cleaned.
Artist: Unknown
Period: Circa 1720
Measurements: W71cm x D8cm x H92cm | W31in x D3in x H36in
