Pair Of Willow Mackintosh Armchairs

Charles Rennie Mackintosh 1868-1928.
Edition cassina 1973 numbered 2962-2966
Identity Card Cassina.
Designed in 1903 for the ground floor of Glasgow's Willow Tea Rooms, this "throne" served - due to its importance - to divide the space and create two separate rooms. This was the manager's place or, according to other research, the cashier, who put the cash in the compartment below the seat. The small squared decorative motif on the splendid curved wooden back represents, in stylized form, a willow, to stay true to the dominant theme of the tea house, which bore the name of 'willow lane' from what this armchair was inspired and named. Mackintosh devoted himself a great deal to the tea houses that were expanding at the time in Glasgow to compete with "Gin Houses" and alcoholism. With the help of his wife, he took care of every detail, from the building to the uniform of the waiters, the chairs, the antique tables, the lamps, the mirrors, the windows, the centerpiece vases and cutlery.
Lacquered ash structure with open pores.
Independent cushions with fabric cover.
