Pair of Oil Paintings, N Willis Pryce (1904-1966)
We have for sale a pair of attractive oil paintings on board by the Birmingham based artist Norman Willis Pryce (N Willis Pryce) 1904 - 1966.
The paintings are in the typical lively and vibrant style of the artist, the upper painting in figure 1 depicts a Cumbrian scene of rapids in a wooded river valley and carries the title "Borrowdale Birches" to the reverse beneath the backboard. The river in this case is the river Derwent. This painting is signed N Willis Pryce.
The lower painting in figure 1 depicts an elevated view of a river valley winding its way towards an estuary in the distance and carries to the reverse the title "The Wye, Wyndcliff and Bristol Channel" beneath the backboard. This painting is signed Willis Pryce, a signature used by both father and son. Both paintings have been refitted and re-secured into their original frames. Judging by the simple dark oak frames, the paintings probably date from somewhere around the mid to late 1940s.
The paintings are both 9.5 inches (24.5cm) high and 14.5 inches (36.8cm) wide. Both are in a good condition with no craquelure, although the upper painting in figure 1 has one or two very small flake like losses to the pigment at the mid centre right edge.
About the Artist
Norman Willis Pryce was a mid 20th century landscape artist and son of the prolific landscape artist George Willis Pryce (member of the Royal Society of Artists and Royal Watercolour Society). Norman, like his father specialised in painting highland, lake district and waterside views in a lively, accurate style with vibrant lifelike colours.
