Description:
This is a stunning early antique Georgian oak Cwpwrdd Tridarn, circa 1720, in good condition, with small proportions and stunning colour, incorporating a secret compartment, originating from North Wales, most likely Snowdonia. Exceptional colour and lovely early panelled doors displaying high arches. This type of cupboard was typically used for storing kitchen utensils and food and would have taken pride of place as one of the most valuable possessions in the house. The top section features a large open canopy top section incorporating panelled sides with turned spindles at front. The middle section incorporates three narrow moulded frieze drawers with three small cupboard doors below. The central cupboard door, which was designed to impersonate a fixed panel, is in fact a hidden door, which contains four small drawers behind. The secret compartments can be accesses by sliding a wooden peg behind the door, accessed through the neighbouring cupboard door. The central section is decorated with turned droppers at either end. The lower section incorporates two wider moulded drawers above two large double panelled doors. The base incorporates a fixed shelf inside the cupboard. The cupboard doors retain their original iron pin hinges the drawer fronts feature later period brass knobs and the drawers incorporate later oak linings. The brass key escutcheons are original. The cupboard doors feature working locks (with key). The cupboard stands on its original block feet, lovely fielded panel sides and the back retains its original panelled boards. The cupboard frame and doors have been constructed in the traditional joined peg construction method. The cupboard dismantles into three sections, for ease of transport and access into the house. All in all, this is a stunning piece of early period oak antique furniture.

To quote from the book, “Oak Furniture, The British Tradition” (Victor Chinnery): “Apart from the tester bedstead, the great press / court cupboard was the most important and prestigious piece of antique furniture many small households could boast. As a type, they first appeared in the second half of the 16th century, and continued to be made in remote areas until the beginning of the 19th century”. This cupboard could have been made for or donated as a wedding present to a newly married couple. It would have provided significant storage space for utensils and food.

This item features a rich dark red “oxblood” oak colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.

This item would look superb in a variety of rooms including the hallway, kitchen or dining room. This item would certainly grace any home and is a great investment, as it is extremely functional. So don’t miss out on your chance to own a lovely piece of antique furniture.
