Mid/late 19th century Indian throne chair
A highly decorative mid/late 19th century Indian throne chair with gold finish, possibly from the Bengal region.
The chair consists of a repousse frame with floral and foliate designs with original red velvet upholstery.
The back has scrolling foliage and floral decoration with central red velvet padded back with purl work (embroidery) in gold and silver thread, possibly of a Royal coat of arms.
This leads down to the impressive arms in the form of lions or possibly tigers, these possibly being made from lead with a gold finish.
The seat pad is again in original red velvet upholstery with purl work (embroidery) with gold and silver thread and is in good condition for age.
Underneath the seat, the serpentine shaped front rail is decorated with a central lion mask, grapes and vine leaves, flowers and scrolling foliate designs.
The chair is supported by two cabriole legs to the front with foliate decoration and terminating with hairy paw feet, the side rails of similar design to the front rail.
The back of the chair is also profusely decorated with floral and foliate designs also in the central oval to the top and continuing down the rear splay legs.
Similar examples can be found in the book by Amin Jaffer, 'Furniture from British India & Ceylon' pages 224-227 etc
These types of throne chairs were influenced by the British in the 19th century and Indian Princes began to sit in the Western style of elevated chair at this time. This style of chair is based on a Rococo design and was popular in Indian palaces, throne chairs typically being of similar design: carving, cartouche back, cabriole legs etc. with the frames being covered with gold or silver finished metal.
This chair is in good condition for it's age and can go straight into a home or collection, it is rare to find such a chair with original upholstery.
