Large Linen wall map of Africa. 1920's.
A Philips schoolroom map of Africa.
A wonderful map of Africa and Europe, with parts of the Middle East also displayed. The detail of Africa shows the countries and their colonisation at the time. Mounted on linen and printed in London by the renown map maker Philips.
I have displayed six photographs and these have white patches on them which are reflections of light on the glossed front and not an issue of condition.
The scale is 1:7,500,000 (approximately 120 miles to the inch).
Displayed are capital Cities and large towns with a different icon for each according to their population.
As shown on all maps when I was at school, the British Commonwealth countries are shown in pink, the French in green, the Belgian in orange, Portuguese in purple and the Spanish in yellow.
Also displayed are railway lines, rivers and rapids, country borders, deserts with no vegetation and shipping routes. On a smaller map in one corner are shown the Air routes.
Interestingly no major road network is shown.
It is not dated but according to the names of the countries and towns (Persia, Tanganyika Territories, Leningrad, etc.) It dates between 1916 and 1935. Certainly from the interwar period.
It is in original and in good condition, with no tears or schoolboy inks scribbled on it. As expected with such a piece It does have age related scuffs, but these do not deter from the map. I have replaced the suspension ribbon with a new one.
It is large measuring 68 inches tall and 48 inches wide. It rolls up, and will be posted in a sturdy tube for protection.
