Khal Mohammadi Rug 121cm x 78
Khal Mohammadi Rug 121cm x 78cm
Origin Afghanistan
Style Khal Mohammadi
Provenance N/A
Dated Late 20th C
Hand Knotted 100% Wool Pile.
Of an unusual design, in that this Khal Mohammadi is overtly floral rather than the more ordinary use of repeated guls. Perfectly balanced between floral, geometrical and traditional, this piece uses a four-colour palette in tremendously effective form. The border being made up of floral rosettes of an eight petal design with the central field being a well thought out pattern comprising of two central tarantulas beset with floral rosettes and branches. In this example, although the colours are typical of a Khal Mohammadi piece, the design is more atypical and out of character in a somewhat refreshing fashion.
Perhaps one of the only rugs not named after the territory they belong to Khal Mohammadi rugs are actually named after the legendary figure that created the distinctive design. Khal Mohammad, created the design while living in Afghanistan. Today most Khal Mohammadi rugs are woven in or around the town of Kunduz in the north of Afghanistan.
Of Turkman heritage these pieces are similar to Turkmans in that the designs fit in easily both with contemporary or period living spaces.
Having warm and deep lustes the colours of these pieces are dark, usually deep reds with dark blue or black used for the accents or details. The colour and dyes themselves are what give the rug its name, it was Khal Mohammadi who developed the red tones found in these adaptable rugs.
