A superb example of traditional Japanese design, this kaidan tansu—or step chest—offers access to drawers and cupboards on both sides and conveniently separates into two sections for ease of movement throughout the home. Crafted from richly patinated hardwood, its design features a tiered arrangement of compartments, each adorned with ornate iron handles and decorative escutcheons. Originally conceived to serve as both storage and staircase in Meiji-era merchant houses, this piece embodies the ingenuity and elegance of Japanese craftsmanship. Striking in form and function, it makes a sculptural statement while offering versatile storage and display.
