A Japanese Meiji Period elm and pine Tansu comprising a black stained cleated top over a pair of sliding doors and two drawers on a narrow plinth base. The sliding doors with their figured elm panels and inset white metal handles are a particularly attractive feature. They open to reveal a large space which would be suitable for storing board games, files etc. Figured elm also features on the drawer fronts together with iron bail handles. Elm is also used for the plinth and elsewhere on the front which contrasts with the pine used for the panelled sides, top and back.

(34 3/4 x 22 1/4 x 31 1/2 inch)

Condition: Good antique condition with marks commensurate with age. The top has probably been applied later. There is cross-grain shrinkage in the sides resulting in a small gap between the planks.
