James H.Crossland 1852-1939 Oil Lake District James Henry Crossland 1852-1939 Oil Painting %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
We are delighted to offer for sale this very large, dramatic oil on canvas by the artist JAMES HENRY CROSSLAND, who has signed the painting J.H.Crossland in the lower left hand corner. The painting depicts a landscape view of a lake with high mountains behind, with mist wreathing the tops of the mountains. There are some cattle of the nearside bank of the lake. Although we cannot be 100% certain of the location, we have some pencil writing on the stretcher, which, although indistinct, we think reads Elterwater. You can read Elt and w. Elterwater Tarn in the Lake District does have Langdale Pikes in the distance, so this may be correct. The vast majority of the landscapes by this artist are either in the Lake District or Scotland.

JAMES HENRY CROSSLAND, 1852-1939 was a landscape painter in oils. He was born in Wakefield, Yorkshire on the 22nd August 1852, the son of a Vicar, but moved to Derbyshire with his family and then to the Lake District, variously Windermere, Bowness, Broughton-in-Furness, where he died in Ambleside, Cumbria in 1939. He painted some Scottish landscapes, but mostly worked in the Lake District and was a founder Member of the Lake Artists' Society in 1904. Judging by the number of paintings sold in recent times, he was not a very prolific artist, but a very good one, as his larger paintings attract high prices.

His son Cyril was a well known marine biologist and another son Arthur, was an art student in 1911 (There is a painting of his available on google images, but he also patented a flexible gesso for canvas in the 1930s in London).

He exhibited at Suffolk Street from 1885, the Royal Academy (10 paintings) from 1898, 24 paintings at the Royal Cambrian Academy, 15 at the Royal Society of Artists Birmingham, and elsewhere in the provinces.

There are 18 of his paintings in the National Collection, 8 at the Lakeland Art Trust, 2 in Keswick Museum, 2 at the University of Exter, 2 at the Ruskin Museum and l each at Blackburn Museum, the National Trust, Derby Museum and Nuneaton Museum. These can be viewed online at BBC - Your Paintings under the name of the artist.

Biographical details may be found at The Painters of the Northern Counties of England and Wales by Dennis Child, The Dictionary of British Artists, The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood and The Dictionary of British Artists by Grant M. Waters.

Auction results for works by this artist may be found at artprice (72 listings), arcadja (26), artnet (34) and findartinfo (28). A similar sized landscape oil achieved £1,050 in 2007.

The painting is newly framed in a 3 1/2" swept gilt frame to suit. It is ready to hang.
