Isle of Arran oil painting by Henry H Cubley oil painting Glen Sannox Isle of Arran %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
Oil on canvas landscape scene by Henry Hadfield Cubley (1858-1934) depicting Glen Sannox on the Isle of Arran. The scene is typical of the artist's work who specialised in landscapes with Highland cattle. The style is quite impressionist with a great deal of emphasis on the misty weather conditions and the feel of the landscape. The work is signed to the lower right though it is partially covered by the mount, it is also signed, titled and dated (1918) on the reverse. Henry Hadfield Cubley specialised in Welsh and Scottish mountain landscapes, often romanticized and featuring highland cattle. He was born in Newark on Trent and grew up there. He painted many countryside scenes in what is now the West Midlands. He exhibited at the Birmingham Salon and also the Royal Academy and painted for Raphael Tuck & Sons who were publishers to Her Majesties the King and Queen and produced many postcards containing Wolverhampton scenes. The painting has been professionally cleaned and is mounted in a period frame which has had some repair. The whole is a good example of the artist's work and of later highland landscape painting.
