Irish Painting Michael Healy Original Watercolour

Michael Healy Original Watercolour 'Dubliners' from Dawson Gallery Dublin. This important painting of Irish life in the dying days of English rule in the Republic of Ireland. Michael Healy was an important artist of the late 19th and early 20th century. He was particularly famous for his stained glass work and books have been published on the subject. In his spare time he wandered the streets of Dublin in the early 1900s, sketching the working people and characters of the streets. This painting of the Rag and Bone Man or Scrap Dealer, dates from this early period at a time of the rise of Irish Republicanism. Crippling poverty and discrimination, helped give rise to Republican Movement at this time. The real street life of Dublin was captured by Michael Healy in sketches like this one.
Michael never painted this to sell, rather they were made for his enjoyment and provide an historical account of an Ireland undergoing massive change. After his death in 1941, these paintings recovered from his studio in Dublin, were sold by the 'Dawson Gallery'
Approx dimensions including frame 12.5 inches x 16.5 inches
