Harry Sticks 1867-1938 Oil/Canvas River Tyne

We are pleased to offer for sale this finely executed oil on canvas by the artist HARRY (HENRY) JAMES STICKS, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner and dated it 1892. On the stretcher verso the artist has faintly written in pencil Misty Morning Black Midden Harry Sticks.
The painting depicts the notorious Black Midden Rocks at Tynemouth, at the mouth of the River Tyne. These rocks were the cause of many wrecks and used to stretch right across the river. There are a few sailing boats visible through the mist and many beautifully painted seagulls on the beach and the water.
This is one of a matching pair of paintings by this artist that we are currently listing.
HARRY STICKS, (1867-1938) was a member of the prolific Sticks family of painters. He lived in Newcastle upon Tyne and was the son of George Blackie Sticks 1843-1900 and the brother of George Edward Sticks. (See also Henry Sticks 1845-1878, James Sticks b.1813, Andrew James Sticks, William Sticks and William Jr.)
He was taught to paint by his father and painted in both oil and watercolour, usually on a small scale, unlike his father and brother. His paintings were usually of scenes in Northumberland, Scotland and the Lake District. Two of his paintings are exhibited in Shipley Art Gallery. He also travelled on the Continent.
He exhibited 3 paintings at the Birmingham City Art Gallery, 1 at the Royal Scottish Academy, 1 at the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolour and at many exhibitions in the North East.
His biographical details may be found in the Dictionary of British Artist, the Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood and Painters in the Northern Counties of England and Wales by Dennis Child. There is also some information about him on google, including some gallery listings of works for sale by this artist. Auction results may be found at the usual sites.
The painting is framed to match its partner in a 3" swept cream and gilt frame. It is ready to hang.
