George IV Silver Shell Teaspoon, Wm. Troby, 1828
This is a fine quality George IV Sterling Silver Teaspoon. Basically in the Old English pattern it is enhanced by a shell bowl, a very popular design in the first half of the 19th century. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The teaspoon is made in London by William Troby and dates to 1828. William Troby was primarily a spoon maker, although some other pieces by him are known. He was active in London between around 1810 and 1830.
Condition is very good, with just one tiny ding in the shell bowl and the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 190 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The teaspoon is 13cm / 5.1ins long and weighs a respectable 11.9g / 0.42oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the underside of the stem are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter n for 1828, the George IV duty mark and the WT makers' mark for William Troby.
