George IV Silver Salt Spoon, Thomas Austin, 1824
This is a good quality George IV Sterling Silver Salt Spoon in the classic Fiddle pattern. The bowl of the spoon has been gilded to protect it from the corrosive effects of salt. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The spoon is made in London by Thomas Austin and dates to 1824. Little is known about Thomas Austin and he only seems to have been active for a short period of time between around 1818 and 1830, which makes his marks quite a rare one.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents and only the absolute minimum of superficial surface wear. The gilding to the bowl is in particularly good order. This has either been very well looked after or seen very little use for nearly 200 years. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The salt spoon is 10.6cm / 4.2ins long and weighs in at a respectable 11.3g / 0.4oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the underside of the stem are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter II for 1824, the George IV duty mark and the T.A makers' mark for Thomas Austin.
