George III Silver Vinaigrette, John Shaw, 1804

Here we have a neat George III Sterling Silver Vinaigrette with a Gilt interior. The vinaigrette is oval with a plain exterior, the lid being engraved with SP to JHB, so this was obviously originally given as a gift. The interior is gilded and the pierced grille has a rose design.
The vinaigrette is made in Birmingham by silversmith John Shaw and dates to 1804. This is an early piece by Shaw as he only registered his mark in 1803. He specialised in small items such as snuff boxes, nutmeg graters and vinaigrettes and remained in business until the late 1820s.
Condition is good with no dings or dents and just a little rubbing to the gilt near the hinge of the grille, which may have had a small repair at some point in the past. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The vinaigrette is 3.3cm / 1.3ins long, 2.3cm / 0.9ins wide and 1cm / 0.4ins high. It weighs in at a respectable 15.6g / 0.55oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inside of the lid, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter g for 1804, the George III duty mark and the I S makers' mark for John Shaw.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the vinaigrette.
