Vinaigrettes are small boxes used to hold sponges soaked in smelling salts, pleasant smelling oils, perfume or aromatic vinegar. They were used by Georgian and Victorian ladies and gentlemen to revive faintness and ward off unpleasant odours.

This is a lovely example of a George III vinaigrette, of engraved silver cushion shape with gilt interior and grill, with the unusual feature of having the sponge still present. Hallmarked Birmingham 1817, makers mark John Shaw.

Both the box and grill hinges are in good order and lid closes properly. The gilt is not worn and there are only minor tiny signs of wear on the silver. The sponge has a tiny corner missing and is brittle with age but holds together well for its' age - a great example for its' age.
