George III Silver Spice Ladle, R. Crossley, 1804

This is a smart George III Sterling Silver Spice Ladle in the traditional Old English pattern. The bowl of the spoon is gilded and there are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
Spice ladles are the smallest size of ladle and were used in the 18th and 19th centuries for sprinkling the likes of cayenne, cinnamon and allspice onto food at the table.
This spice ladle was made in London by renowned silversmith Richard Crossley and dates to 1804. Richard Crossley was a specialist spoon maker who registered his first mark at Goldsmith’s Hall in 1782. He made consistently good quality flatware right up until his death in 1815 and is always a name worth looking out for.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after 220 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The spice ladle is 12.6cm / 4.96ins long and weighs in at a very respectable 20.9g / 0.74oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the London date letter I for 1804, the George III duty mark and the R C makers' mark for Richard Crossley.
Shipping in the UK is £6.50 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
