George III Silver Serving Spoon, Exeter, 1793

This is a fine quality George III Sterling Silver Serving Spoon in the classic Old English pattern. The spoon has the initials WB above JM elegantly engraved at the top of the stem.
The spoon is made in Exeter by Richard Ferris and dates to 1793. Richard Ferris was principally a very accomplished specialist spoon maker but one or two other pieces by him are known. He was active in Exeter between the late 1780s and around 1815.
Condition is extremely good for a spoon of this age with no dings or dents and only the most minimal superficial surface wear that has to be expected after nearly 230 years. As it has two sets of initials, it is possible that the spoon was a wedding present and kept as a treasured item rather than being in everyday use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The spoon is 21.4cm / 8.4ins long and weighs in at a substantial 50.8g / 1.8oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the underside of the stem remain nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the three towered wall assay mark for Exeter, the date letter u for 1793, the George III duty mark and the RF makers' mark for Richard Ferris.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the spoon.
