Exemplary Georgian Irish Wing Back Chair c.1750

An extremely rare and very fine quality Irish wing back armchair made in c. 1750 with a solid Cuban Mahogany frame and with provenance from an Irish estate where it has been in the same family for generations. Chairs of this quality and scarcity rarely come to market.
The substantial cabriole front legs with huge naturalistic lion paw feet and beautifully carved with large scrolled inverted scallop shells to each knee overlapping the deep and curved front apron, centred by a scallop shell. The tall back with rolled and scrolled rest and gently tapered shoulders. The wings tapering to join the lovely scrolled and outswept arms. The rear legs raked back with substantial flared feet, the side aprons are serpentine shaped to given a lighter and more elegant proportion and the feet are co-joined by serpentine shaped offset box stretcher with scallop shell crest to centre.
No expense was spared in the making of this chair. Solid Cuban mahogany, the frame tight and original throughout (photographs of the frame prior to reupholstery are available on request).
The chair is very heavy, capacious and extremely comfortable. This is masterpiece of Irish joinery and design, carrying all the hallmarks of a Dublin master maker and of a similar form to an open armchair at Malahide Castle, Dublin (see pg 107, fig 136 Knight of Glin and James Peill Irish Furniture).
Dimensions are:
32 inches wide, 38 inches deep and 49 inches high (all max)
Floor to seat is 21 inches.
For metric please multiply by 2.5 I describe and photograph my pieces accurately and with the aim that on arrival each will exceed expectations.
I operate a full refund guarantee and am always happy to give free, honest and friendly advice.
