This is a fine Edwardian Sterling Silver Dwarf Candlestick in the classic circular design with line decoration. The candlestick was made by Martin, Hall & Co and assayed in Chester in 1908. The firm's origins in Sheffield date back to 1820 with Richard Martin & Ebenezer Hall becoming the controlling partners in 1854. They were one of the best known and most respected of British silver manufacturers in the 19th century and continued in business up until 1936.

The Chester assay office was established in 1701 and remained open until 1962. It was always one of the less busy assay offices and dealt with primarily smaller pieces such as antique jewellery and personal items as well as taking "overspill" items when the Sheffield and Birmingham offices were hectic. Because it closed in 1962, Chester silver has become much sought after by collectors.

This dwarf candlestick is in a style that remained unchanged for decades through the 19th century and into the 20th. It was really only the arrival of Art Deco that saw different styles of silver dwarf candlesticks becoming more common.

These small candlesticks were very much working items, being used primarily on desks to both give light and for melting sealing wax to close up letters and create seals on legal documents. Like most of them this has seen some use and has some small dings here and there. The leather cover on the filled base is a little patchy. The candlestick does however remain in good overall condition with no splits in the silver and is perfectly usable for a candle today. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The candlestick is 8.3cm / 3.25" in diameter across the base and stands 7cm / 2.75" high. The weight is 130.7g / 4.6oz but please remember this includes the filler in the base, which is added for stability.

The hallmarks are a little rubbed but still easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword and 3 wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter "H" for 1908 and the RM over EH for Richard Martin & Ebenezer Hall of Martin, Hall & Co.
