Edwardian Silver Butter Spreader, Glasgow, 1904

This is an interesting Edwardian Scottish Sterling Silver Butter Spreader in the Celtic Point pattern. Celtic Point is an Irish and Scottish variation on the Old English pattern where the end of the stem comes to a distinct point rather than being rounded. The spreader has four prongs at the top for making a ridged pattern in the pat of butter and a broad blade for spreading the butter onto bread.
The butter spreader is made in Glasgow by silversmith John Alexander Fettes and dates to 1904. John Fettes ran his business from Albert Street in the Townshead district of Glasgow, which was home to a number of silversmiths. He was active between around 1890 and 1930 and produced a wide range of items.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 115 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The butter spreader is 12.6cm / 4.9ins long and weighs in at a respectable 10.2g / 0.36oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the underside of the stem are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion rampant for Scottish Sterling Silver, the tree, fish and bell assay mark for Glasgow, the date letter H for 1904 and the J.F makers' mark for John Alexander Fettes.
Shipping in the UK is £4 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For.
