Edwardian Arts & Crafts Oak Hall Chair Dated 1904

A handsome antique Edwardian dragon carved Arts & Crafts oak hall chair dated 1904. This beautifully carved chair is in the form of Sgabello hall chair, the tall backrest carved with dragons and foliage and the date 1904 above a solid quarter sawn oak seat. The front footboard is carved with two dragons, united to the back footboard by a central stretcher. With beautiful carving and original warm patina, would grace any room.
A sgabello is a type of stool typical of the Italian Renaissance and often associated with Venice. Its name derives from the word scabellum (Latin for ‘stool’). They were usually placed in halls, often featuring the family’s coat of arms alongside elaborately carved mythical beasts and grotesques and as such were not designed for comfort but rather to impress important guests. Often later chairs are copies of original 16th century designs.
