Early 20th C. Silver Travelling Inkwell, Gorham

This is an attractive Early 20th Century Sterling Silver Travelling Inkwell. The inkwell is cylindrical with a smooth flat base. The sides and top are extensively decorated with flowers and foliage. The hinged lid opens to reveal the removable glass bottle with a cork stopper.
The inkwell was made in the USA by the Gorham Manufacturing Company and dates to around 1900-1910. One of the most famous names in American silverware, the Gorham Manufacturing Company began life in 1831 when Jabez Gorham and Henry Webster founded Gorham & Webster. They went through various partnerships and name changes until settling as the Gorham Manufacturing Company in 1865. Based in Providence, RI, they were hugely successful up until the 1960s when the company was sold and then became just a brand name changing owners on many occasions.
Condition is very good, with no chips or cracks in the glass, just a couple of tiny dings in the base and the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. There is a thread around the neck of the glass bottle suggesting that it may originally have had a screw on cap over the cork stopper but if so this has sadly gone. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The inkwell is 4.5cm / 1.8ins high and 3.9cm / 1.5ins in diameter. Without the glass bottle it weighs in at 27.7g / 0.98oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together it weighs 76.0g / 2.7oz.
The underside of the based is stamped STERLING for 925/1000 grade Sterling Silver and has the lion, anchor and G stamps for the Gorham Manufacturing Company.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail Tracked 24.
