This is a well made Early 19th Century Old Sheffield Plate Wax Jack. The circular base and the top of the drip tray are line decorated. The body bows outwards to encompass the wax taper and the turning key.

Wax jacks were used in the 18th and early 19th centuries for sealing wax. The wax taper could be lit when required and the wax dripped onto an envelope or document that needed to be sealed. As the taper burned down you turned the key to expose the amount you wanted at the top.

The wax jack is British and dates to between around 1800 and 1840, though it could be just a little earlier. There is no makers' mark so we cannot say who it was manufactured by.

Condition is good, although a new taper will be required if you want to use it. As is usual with Old Sheffield Plate there are a few coppery glints showing through the silver around the base, the drip tray and on the key handle. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The wax jack stands 14cm / 5.5ins high and is 8cm / 3.1ins wide. It weighs 225.5g / 7.9oz.
