David N.Ingles ARHA Oil Portrait of an Irish Lady
We are pleased to offer for sale this rare portrait by the Scottish artist David Nicholson Ingles, who has signed the painting in red to the lower right hand corner and dated it 1919. The painting depicts a waist length portrait of an aristocratic Irish lady, who is wearing her hair parted in the middle and pulled back into a chignon at the back of her head. She is wearing a purple dress, with a diamond brooch at the v of the neckline.
We say that this painting is rare because we have been unable to find any other portraits by this artist that have sold in the last twenty years. The back of the stretcher bears an impressed label from a Dublin Artists' Supplier.
David Nicholson Ingles was born in Selkirk in Scotland in 1888, the youngest child of his parents. In the Census of 1891, they were living at Forest View, Forest Road, Selkirk, and were still there in 1901. By 1917, David was in Dublin and is sometimes referred to as an Irish artist. In 1919, the year he painted this portrait, he was elected an Associate Member of the Royal Hibernian Academy. He was a portrait painter. By 1930, he was back in London, where he died in Edmonton in 1933, at the very young age of 45.
He exhibited 4 paintings at the Royal Scottish Academy, 1 at the Glasgow Institute, 1 at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, and 25 at the Royal Hibernian Academy.
His somewhat sketchy biographical details are listed in The Dictionary of British Artists (Collectors' Club), where he is listed in David N.l Inglis and The Dictionary of British Artists by Grant M. Waters, where he is correctly listed as Ingles.
He has one portrait in the National Collection, which is a portrait of William Booth, hanging in the National Portrait Gallery and one portrait owned by the National Trust, at Castle Ward, County Down.
The portrait has been newly framed in a 3 1/2" ornate, pale gilt frame. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
