Exquisite Antique Arts & Crafts Revival Heraldic Hand-Carved Wood Crest Wall Plaque, 1919 – Historic Rivington & Blackrod Grammar School, England
A Century-Old Masterpiece of British Craftsmanship and Heritage
Offered here is a singular piece of English educational and ecclesiastical history: a hand-carved wooden wall plaque bearing the crest of Rivington & Blackrod Grammar School (Lancashire, England), created over 100 years ago by a young scholar at the school. This is no mere reproduction or souvenir — it is a unique, original artifact, carved by hand with remarkable skill, and steeped in tradition, symbolism, and provenance.
A Historic English School with Royal Origins
Founded in 1566 under the charter of Queen Elizabeth I, Rivington Grammar School was established by Bishop James Pilkington, one of the leading reformers of the English Church. The school’s crest draws on heraldic elements from both the Pilkington family arms and the See of Durham, representing its deep roots in the Church of England and centuries of academic tradition.
The carved mitre (bishop’s headdress) symbolizes ecclesiastical authority and Christian foundation, while the star above represents enlightenment through faith and learning. Together with the initials RBGS, these elements embody the school’s timeless values of scholarship, faith, and guidance.
Crafted by a Young Artisan, 1919–1920
This plaque is not a commercial product but a personal creation, carved by hand between 1919 and 1920 by Herbert Robert Southworth, then just 14 years old and a student at the school. His youthful skill produced a crest that retains both the solemnity of heraldry and the charm of handcrafted individuality.
On the reverse, his name, age, and the date are inscribed, accompanied by a later provenance label confirming its origin and ownership. This makes the piece not only an art object but also a document of its own making, with history literally carved into its surface.
Shape & Carving Style
The plaque is rectangular in form yet softened by rounded edges and gentle contours that give it a refined, timeless presence on the wall. The central crest — with its bishop’s mitre, star, and initials RBGS — is executed in low relief carving (bas-relief).
This traditional sculptural technique allows the design to rise subtly from the surface, catching light and casting delicate shadows without appearing heavy or overstated. The result is a piece that combines decorative elegance with dignified restraint, hallmarks of early 20th-century British craftsmanship.
Provenance & Authenticity
Carved by: Herbert Robert Southworth (student, RBGS)
