Antique French Bronze Portrait Bust on Breccia Marble

Description

An elegant late 19th-century French cast bronze portrait bust depicting Diana de Poitiers, circa 1499-1566, the celebrated French Renaissance noblewoman associated with the court of Henry II of France.

Dating stylistically to circa 1880, the bust is catalogued as French School, after Jean-Antoine Houdon, 1741-1828.

Diana is portrayed with an elaborate coiffure, serene expression and gracefully arranged drapery. Her head is gently elevated, giving the portrait a poised and aristocratic character.

The bronze retains an attractive naturally aged brown patina. Deeper tones have developed within the recessed areas of the hair, facial contours and drapery, while gentle rubbing to the raised surfaces creates warmer highlights.

The bust is mounted upon a richly figured square breccia marble base displaying attractive reds, ochres, creams and darker natural mineral veining.

The combination of warm patinated bronze and richly coloured marble gives the sculpture considerable decorative presence despite its compact cabinet scale.

The sculpture is apparently unsigned and no identified foundry mark is currently known. The attribution "after Jean-Antoine Houdon" indicates a later interpretation following a sculptural model or composition associated with Houdon rather than a work executed by Houdon himself.

Diana de Poitiers

Diana de Poitiers was one of the most celebrated women of Renaissance France. Renowned for her beauty, sophistication and influence, she became closely associated with Henry II of France.

Her enduring historical reputation made her a recurring subject for later artists, particularly during the 19th-century revival of interest in French Renaissance history and court culture.

Jean-Antoine Houdon

Jean-Antoine Houdon, 1741-1828, was one of the foremost French portrait sculptors of his generation. His refined approach to portraiture and exceptional modelling exerted a lasting influence upon later European sculpture.

The present late 19th-century bronze is conservatively catalogued as after Jean-Antoine Houdon and is not attributed directly to the sculptor.
