Bracket Clock by John Stoddart, London. Circa 1840 English Rosewood Table Clock %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
A beautiful and substantial table clock in a rosewood case in fine condition.

The substantial 8 day duration, double fusee, 5 pillar movement with Anchor Recoil escapement and rack striking the hours on a rear-mounted bell of good tone. Also having a strike/silent selector and hour pull repeating. The rectangular backplate is engraved with the maker's signature "John Stoddart, LONDON" and also has a pendulum rod locking block and knob for transit.

Behind an 8" diameter, bowed and painted iron dial which is notched at the upper perimeter through with protrudes the strike/silent selecting lever. The off-white background has a slim divided minute track with diamond quarters, Roman hour numerals and the centre is signed "John Stoddart, LONDON" above and below the centre. The hands are matching blued steel 'open moon' style.

Contained in a beautiful Rosewood veneered case of good colour and patina. The top has a low break-arch with an applied edge moulding and brass strip inlay contouring the shape. A locking cast brass bezel covers the dial and has a bowed glass. The quartered areas around the bezel have recessed triangular panels with cast brass framing and the front edges have rosewood strips that are inlaid with brass lines. The short plinth has a ribbed moulding to 3 sides and the case sits upon 4 brass ball feet. The case sides have brass ringed and floral cornucopia carrying handles above rectangular sound apertures with red cloth-backed, cast brass fishscale frets. The rear has a glazed and conforming shaped locking door. The pull repeating cord exits from the upper right side and has what appears to be its original ivory teardrop knob.

John Stoddart is recorded as working from 1839 until 1844.

This is a particularly good example of this type of table clock and appears to have always been excellently maintained. Notably, this style was usually only produced by the top makers of the time.

Dimensions16" high x 11 5/8" wide x 6 5/8" deep. Category Antique Clocks Date 1840  Mid 19th Century Antiques Material Rosewood Origin English Condition The general condition of this clock is that of well-maintained throughout its life also, it has been very well restored in recent years, so much so, that I have simply thoroughly checked it, cleaned dirty areas and bearings, freshened up the oil and made various adjustments. I am perfectly happy to sell this clock with a full 1 years guarantee and consider any other work at present to be unnecessary. It is working perfectly with no signs of wear and it is keeping excellent time. It really is rare to find such a well looked after clock for resale. We can supply more photos so that the condition can be clearly seen. There are of course, small areas of damage such as the old crack to the veneer on the top due to age etc but nothing of concern. The case looks beautiful and I haven't cleaned and waxed it yet. If you like this style of clock then this example is a must and it is also priced extremely competitively.
