Antique Victorian Carved Oak Country Bookcase
A Victorian carved oak bookcase with a country sporting theme of relief carved hunting dogs, game birds and foliage. With a leaf carved cornice above a deep carved frieze centred by a cartouche, the two glazed doors with leaf carved mouldings and flanked by turned tapering fluted column. The base section has two frieze drawers above two cupboard doors carved with hanging game birds, fruit and foliage and raised on flattened bun feet whilst the sides are panelled and line carved with scrolling leaves.
There are three adjustable shelves to the upper section (only two were used in the photographs) and one fixed shelf to the base allowing approx 12ft9in (7.85m) of books to be displayed. In a deep shade of brown with traditional wax finish, it is in very good condition, there are some marks and shrinkage lines to joins on the top which is quartersawn. There is also some evidence of old worm to the underside of the frieze (this has been treated for peace of mind).
