3 x George III Scottish Silver Teaspoons, 1808
This is a fine set of three George III Scottish Sterling Silver Teaspoons in the traditional Old English pattern. The spoons have the initials MJ elegantly engraved at the top of the stem.
The spoons were made by Mitchell & Russell and assayed in Edinburgh in 1808. William Mitchell and William Russell were specialist spoon makers based in Glasgow and active between around 1803 and around 1840. Prior to the formal establishment of the Glasgow assay office in 1819, Glasgow silversmiths were required to send their pieces to Edinburgh to be marked. From 1819 onwards, all Mitchell & Russell silver was assayed in Glasgow.
Condition is good with just the regular wear that you would expect in items that have given over 210 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The spoons are each 13.6cm / 5.4ins long and the set of 3 together weighs in at a respectable 41.7g / 1.47oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the stems, are clear to read with just a little rubbing to the makers' marks. They show the thistle for Scottish Sterling Silver, the Edinburgh date letter c for 1808, the George III duty mark and the M & R makers' mark for Mitchell & Russell.
