2 x George III Silver Salt Shovels, G. Cowles 1793
This is a good quality pair of George III Sterling Silver Salt Shovels in the classic Old English pattern. The shovels have the initials J E B elegantly engraved at the tops of the stems.
The salt shovels are made in London by silversmith George Cowles and date to 1793. George Cowles was a specialist spoon maker who registered his mark at Goldsmiths Hall in 1777. He remained in business until around 1810 making spoons and flatware of consistently good quality.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents, no salt corrosion and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after nearly 230 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each salt shovel is 10.2cm / 4ins long and the two together weigh in at 15.0g / 0.53oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the undersides of the stems, are nice and clear to read with just a small amount of rubbing to the makers' marks. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the London date letter s for 1793, the George III duty mark and the GC makers' mark for George Cowles.
Shipping in the UK is £4 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For.
