18th C George III Mahogany Writing Table W.Priest

A Very Fine 18th Century George III Period Mahogany Writing Table Stamped W. Priest / 1&2 Tudor Street / Blackfriars
A very fine late 18th-century George III period mahogany partners library writing table. Constructed from solid mahogany, it features a moulded edge. The rectangular top, with rounded moulded corners, showcases a beautifully patinated black tooled leather inset. Beneath are six mahogany-lined drawers, three on each side, all retaining their original mahogany turned knob handles, working locks, and a functioning key. All six drawers are stamped by W.Priest 1&2 Tudor Street Blackfriars. The elegant table is raised on elegant reeded tapering legs legs that terminate in brass caps and original brass castors. Made in England, circa 1790, this writing table boasts a rich mahogany brown colour and is in superb original condition.
The figured mahogany exhibits a rich, warm patina, perfectly complemented by the exquisite brown/black tooled leather top. This desk or writing table is not only a testament to exceptional craftsmanship but also a stunning example of Georgian design, making it an ideal piece for any refined interior.
W. Priest is well known as an auctioneer, appraiser and retailer (active 1837-1840) whose trade label appears on furniture dating from the late 18th Century through the mid-Victorian era. Labels with the Tudor Street address describe his business as a 'Furniture Warehouse', suggesting that Priest sold furniture secondhand. It has been suggested that he is likely to have specialized in office and library furniture (C. Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture: 1700-1840, Leeds, 1996, pp. 45-46).
