Description

A customer of mine, seeing the chair, told me of the symbolism behind its design. Loyal supporters of Charles the first had these chairs as a secret sign during Cromwell's time. The arch and sometimes a shape in the top rail represents the head of the late king and the 2 rails the 2 shirts he wore on the scaffold so as not to shiver and be thought afraid. And the acorns below the rails represent the oak tree he hid in when being hunted. A wonderful tale, I suppose there's a good possibility there is a basis there.
DateCromwellian : 1650-60 ConditionThere is a shrinkage crack on the seat but it is still strong and two feet have been tipped. Tight in all joints and completely serviceable, excellent for a chair going 370 Yeats old or so.
