Description

So well painted was it that determining the wood is impossible, such a colour suggests late Victorian. The weight indicates that at least the top is oak. By such time as the top coat this accident prone stool had on three separate occasions gained a replacement leg assuming that the octagonal leg is original, which is most likely. Such a stool would be used to raise the height of the light to a more useful level, be it fireside while cooking or on the table for eating. Remember candles were expensive and most households would use only one at a time even if they could afford to buy two at a time. Four different legs shows just how important any piece of household equipment was then. Who today would try for perhaps fifty years to keep mending a simple stool that was acquired twenty years ago?
