An original Castrol Oil enamelled advertising sign. The sign reads Wakefield Castrol Motor Oil Regd. (patented)-The Masterpiece in Oils. This sign would have been used on a Motor Oil Stand / Carrier for 9 motor oil bottles. This superb sign is from a private collection and is in great condition. Please see the images for the condition of the enamel work as with the majority of signs there is always some wear to them. An enamel sign is a sign made using vitreous enamel. These were commonly used for advertising and street signage in the period 1880 to 1950. Benjamin Baugh created the first purpose-built factory for making such signs in Selly Oak in 1889 — the Patent Enamel Company and with a number of other factories throughout the UK.
