Description

A fine and impressive 17ft Irish library bookcase by Robert Strahan & Co of Dublin dating to the early Victorian period.

This rare library bookcase features exceptional timbers and bold acanthus carved scrolling corbels. It has a stepped moulded cornice over four sections with open shelves divided by recessed panel columns headed by acanthus carved scrolling corbels. The lower part is centred by two further sections of open shelves flanked by raised panel and moulded doors, on a plinth base.

The furniture firm of Robert Strahan & Co. was founded in Dublin in 1776 and by 1845 they had two workshops as well as their main commercial premises. Known for their high quality work, the firm exhibited at the Dublin Great Industrial Exhibition in 1853 and the London International Exhibition in 1862. They supplied furniture to many of the most well-known Irish country houses including Doneraile Court, Lisnavagh, and Monte Alverno, many of which had their contents sold off in the 20th century. It is likely that this bookcase was commissioned for a library in one of Irelands large country houses.
