William IV Flame Mahogany Breakfront Wardrobe
Description
This is an impressive William IV breakfront fitted wardrobe of superb quality and dating to circa 1830. It is made with exceptionally well figured flame mahogany veneers which are matched to each side. We think this stunning piece of furniture may be Irish. The central section has a serpentine shaped cornice centred by a mask of a long haired girl and with scrolling carved corbal supports to each side. There are two full length moulded panelled doors below and these are flanked by further panelled doors with c-scroll carvings to the top of the panels. The whole piece stands on a plinth base.
The centre doors open to reveal the original fitted interior with four open trays above two short and two long graduated drawers fitted with brass handles. There are extra grooved runners for the trays so they can be moved if required or additional shelves could be added (or even a hanging rail). The side sections have had the base shelves removed to create a full length hanging space 46.5cm deep which is deep enough for a modern hanger (shown in place). The doors have locks and brass catches, and although there is not a key for the central door the left door lock has a key stuck in it (and the lock has seized open) and there is a separate working key for the right door. The locks are stamped with the makers mark and as 'secure patent' 'three lever'.
For ease of transporting and moving this separates into seven sections.
CONDITION
This is in very good condition and of exceptional quality. There are some usual small minor veneer losses to edges and also to the inside drawers and the top edge of the moulding is missing from one half of the serpentine cornice. These are mentioned for completeness but do not detract from the overall appearance.
